Project Title: Mary’s Kitchen

Our funding helps pay for a weekly supper club in Kirkintilloch for people with dementia. The club offers people with dementia the chance to socialise and enjoy a meal, while providing respite for their families and carers.

“We pick people up at home and either bring them here, or we go out and have a meal. The service users can have a good time and the carers can get out and do something for themselves. Because it’s very hard work, they just need that break. They can go and meet their friends and they’re just that wee bit more relaxed when you go back. We see a real difference in people.

We ask the service users what they want to do. They’re making the choice. We go lots of places, maybe up the Trossachs, or we were at Balmaha the other week there. When you get people who are really anxious, you find that the scenery and things just calms them down.

For some people, they live alone and when they come along they get the chance to meet people a feel a bit less isolated. For others, they maybe just want some time to themselves. They maybe want a break from their family too.”
