Roderick Stewart Macdonald, born in 1922, was the only child of Alexander Muir Macdonald and Lydia Macdonald, and grandson of Roderick John Macdonald. R J Macdonald had been one of the founders of the distillery company Macdonald & Muir Ltd which eventually became Glenmorangie plc.

The RS Macdonald Charitable Trust was set up by Roderick Macdonald in November 1978 with funds inherited from his father. Its objectives reflect his concerns for those who suffered from impairment or as a result of cruelty. They also reflect his love of animals. Following his death in 1995, the Trust fell heir to Roderick’s substantial holding in Glenmorangie plc.

To enable the Trustees the better to fulfil Roderick Macdonald’s charitable intentions the Trustees, in the summer of 2008, secured a judicial re-statement of the Trust’s charitable objects.

The Trustees, currently five in number, meet regularly throughout the year. Applications for awards are normally dealt with at meetings held in May and November.
